Il bollo d’oro: davide bertinelli, the one-man show from arese

For the seventh episode of Il Bollo d’Oro, we meet with Davide Bertinelli, winner of the recent race in Magione with his 1971 GTAm

9 agosto 2024: A true Alfa Romeo enthusiast who was captivated by the thrill of the racetrack when he was very young, at a track day with a Giulia Super at the Monza circuit. Davide lives in one of the historical homes of Alfa Romeo, Arese. Let’s find out more about his interesting story as a driver who competes without a team, doing everything “at home”. His participation in the Alfa Revival Cup is long-lasting and fruitful, with his winning the G2 TC 2000 class three times in a row.


When did you decide to start motor racing?

“I formally began in 2007 with a group 1 GTV 2000 in the Italian Vintage Car Championship. But in reality, I was already used to the racetrack because I had been taking part in track days at Monza ever since I was 15, with a Giulia Super 1600 with a 2000 engine under the hood. I still have that Giulia, and I am finishing its restoration, giving it back its original 1600 engine. It will be ready to compete in vintage races in a few months’ time.

Going back to my story, after a pause of a few years, and a few appearances with the Mitjet, I began regular racing again seven years ago with the Alfa Revival Cup. I chose this championship because all the cars involved are similar and there is competitiveness. I have seen that the level of the cars and the drivers has risen year after year, even in the GTAm class. This pushes me to be stronger than the others, and seek out battles, as was the case at the Red Bull Ring; the duel with Daniele Perfetti was thrilling.”

 

How did this passion of yours begin, and how has it evolved?

“Everything started thanks to my father, who raced in the ‘90s with classic Alfa Romeos; it is a family thing! The GTAm that I now drive already belonged to us, and my father raced with it with the coach Cesare Gatti. It was first of all transformed into Group 1 in 1997 (winning two editions of the Italian Vintage Car Championship), and then rendered GTAm about ten years ago. I am a fan of the Alfa Romeo brand, also because I was born and I live a short distance from the old plant in Arese, which is now a museum. As a boy, I remember the thrill of seeing Alfa Romeo test drivers on the city streets with pre-production models and prototypes, such as the 8C (which was a sight to see!). I have a small collection with a few masterpieces: Giulietta Spider, Giulietta Sprint, 1900 berlina, GTV 2000. They are a growing investment, but I believe that cars should be used and enjoyed, rather than kept in a showcase. I use them as “everyday cars”, with the appropriate caution.

What is the best race that you have taken part in?

“Monza 2023 with Alfa Revival Cup, where the atmosphere was spectacular, thanks to the WEC. I won on my home track, an indescribable feeling.”


What are your goals for the second part of the 2024 season?

“We are a group of 3/4 drivers battling for the championship, and I aim to do well in the three remaining races.”

 

What is your favourite racetrack? Where would you like to race?

“I love Mugello, where I have driven many times. I would like to race in Spa, or on the old Nurburgring (Nordschleife).”

 

What advice would you give to a youngster who wants to get into racing in the Alfa Revival Cup?

“I would recommend beginning with cars that are easier to drive, such as a GT Junior. A GTAm has moderate power and no electronic control, it is harder to handle. Passion for classic Alfa Romeos is something that is in your blood; when you climb inside you feel emotions that no other car can give you.”
